Chasing Butterflies(La chasse aux papillons)

  • Dir: Otar Iosseliani

  • France/Germany/Italy, 1992, French, 115mins, DCP

  • Cast: Narda Blanchet, Pierette Pompom Bailhache, Thamara Tarassachvili

Revolving around two elderly Russian aristocrats who live in an opulent yet dilapidated chateau in a quaint French village, the Georgian master tells his charming fable with understated control, contrasting their gracefully dusty world of old letters, treasures, and contentment with their milieu replete with the greediness of antique dealers, thieves, Hare Kristna folks, Japanese hoteliers, and covetous heirs awaiting their death. In an eerie vignette as a friendly ghost, Iosseliani ponders a melancholic-comic meditation on a society rooted in the past already lost, subtly choreographed with weird humour and great delicacy of the changing face of 20th century France.
