Farewell, Home Sweet Home(Adieu, plancher des vaches!)

Iosseliani’s patented sardonic humour and lyrical detachment are in full display in this absurdist fable in a Buñuelian vein. Forsaking his luxurious chateau, Nicolas, the son of an aristocratic but chaotic family ruled over by his high-powered business-minded mother, prefers washing dishes at a café, and befriends riff-raff and petty thieves. By turns melancholic and hilarious with a poetic association of bizarre incidents and a kaleidoscope of eccentric characters, this is the work of a maverick auteur – and the drunkard father in the film – who sketches a tipsy, breezy portrait of the absurdity of the bourgeois society and the grungy romanticism of Paris youths.
