Heaven
Dir: Diane Keaton
USA, 1987, English, 80mins, DCP
Does the Afterlife really exist? What will it be like and how do we get there? These are just a few of the questions posed in Keaton’s philosophical documentary, compiled from interviews with individuals from all walks of life, faiths and ethnicities. Keaton places her subjects in front of an eclectic series of bizarre sets and dazzling rear projections, intercut with stock footage from movies as diverse as Metropolis and A Matter of Life and Death. The result is a playfully avant-garde experience whose imagery at times evokes the work of David Lynch – not all that surprising when we learn that Heaven was shot by Frederick Elmes (Eraserhead , Blue Velvet ), while Keaton herself would go on to direct an episode of Twin Peaks in 1991.
