Elementary school student and fledging manga artist Fujino initially saw her shut-in classmate Kyomoto’s gorgeously-drawn comic strips as fierce competition. However, their rivalry turns into a successful partnership that would bring them fame. Like the original single-issue manga by Fujimoto Tatsuki, which struck a chord with manga fans and artists alike for honestly depicting both the ecstatic joys and soul-crushing disappointment of artistic creation, Oshiyama Kiyotaka’s vivid animated adaptation is a bittersweet and heartbreaking tale that packs an emotional roller coaster in its short runtime.
