Lucía
Dir: Humberto Solás
Cuba, 1968, Spanish, 160mins, DCP
Cast: Raquel Revuelta, Eslinda Núñez, Adela Legrá
Three strong women in three pivotal moments in Cuban history. Lucía is a masterpiece of Cuban cinema that portrays the social and political experiences of Cuban women as the country undergoes drastic changes – seen through their eyes with love, humour and sensuality. Lucía 1895, an aristocrat, becomes caught up in the promises, loves, and betrayals of Cuban independence. Middle-class Lucía 1932 finds love crossed by the corruption of state politics and the banality of the Cuban bourgeoisie. And Lucía 1961, a worker in the field, is a true child of the revolution who rises against her husband’s traditional patriarchal rule in the face of the new world. Elegant, humane and visually striking, Lucía remains a vital, deeply felt exploration of history and a masterful study of female experience across generations.
