Meantime
Dir: Mike Leigh
UK, 1983, English, 107mins, DCP
Cast: Tim Roth, Gary Oldman, Marion Bailey, Phil Daniels
Following his cinema debut Bleak Moments (1971), Mike Leigh spent over a decade working for TV, culminating in him shooting the grimy realist film Meantime for Channel 4. In a fractious family with three men unemployed, adult son Mark is a loose cannon and his mentally challenged brother Colin (Tim Roth) is falling under the sway of hyperactive skinhead Coxy (Gary Oldman). Fissures break open when a middle-class aunt tries to hire Colin for house painting, unwittingly leading the lad to find his voice. An intimate portrait of dysfunction, disquiet and stagnancy in Thatcherera London.
