Mr. Turner

  • Dir: Mike Leigh

  • UK/France/Germany, 2014, English, 150mins, DCP

  • Cast: Timothy Spall, Dorothy Atkinson, Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson

After Topsy-Turvy ’s study of classic creatives, Mike Leigh looked to the great British painter J.M.W. Turner for an extraordinary biopic. Beginning at the 1829 death of Turner’s father, Leigh’s film tracks the artist’s genius, methods, contradictions and passions. Timothy Spall, already astonishing in earlier dramas, further lifts his game as he inhabits the grunting, growling and imposing figure, an eccentric man of the people who navigates the high-society art world on his own terms. Leigh’s longtime cameraman Dick Pope captures everything with gorgeous cinematography – his shots the fitting complement for Turner’s renown as ‘the painter of light’.
