Leigh threw out the colour of previous works and stepped into a harsh landscape of misogyny and lost souls with the Cannes award-winning Naked . David Thewlis plays Johnny, a manipulative, nihilistic and sexually violent Mancunian drifter who nicks a car and speeds off to London to find old flame Louise. As Louise and her housemate Sophie contend with Johnny’s onslaught as well as the sudden arrival of their cold-blooded landlord, Leigh captures harrowing scenes of abuse and powerlessness, with Thewlis incendiary as the verbose, vicious and vulnerable figure at its core.
