Once Upon a Time There Was a Singing Blackbird(Iko shashvi mgalobeli)

  • Dir: Otar Iosseliani

  • USSR, 1970, Georgian, 85mins, DCP

  • Cast: Gela Kandelaki, Gogi Chkheidze, Jansug Kakhidze

Mockingly named after a Georgian fairy tale, this alluring and wryly poetic comedydrama depicts 36 hours in the life of a young orchestra percussionist, who is defined as much by his friendliness and his tardiness. The world of this hedonistic dreamer is masterfully created with magical sequences of the rich soundscape of Tbilisi’s streets and cafes, and a musical sweep from classical Bach to Georgia folk. Permeated with Jacques Tatiesque curiosity of the shapeshifting society, its unbridled and observational approach embraces the free will of an autonomous life, outweighing the commotion of a world structured against its people.
