Out of Africa

  • Dir: Sydney Pollack

  • USA, 1985, English, Swahili, 161mins, DCP

  • Cast: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Klaus Maria Brandauer

Even against the vast sprawling landscapes of the sub-Saharan plains, Meryl Streep dominates the screen in Sydney Pollack’s defiantly oldfashioned epic. Adapted from Karen Blixen’s celebrated memoir, the film follows a fiercely independent Danish aristocrat, as she moves to British East Africa to honour a marriage of convenience, only to embark on a passionate affair with a charismatic big game hunter. Battling everything from lions and syphilis to the outbreak of the first World War, Blixen remains forthright in her intentions yet compassionate towards the indigenous people, even as the men who swarm around her strive to carve it up in the name of King and Country. An unabashedly romantic rendering of colonial life, yet it remains a beautiful portrait of a woman's awakening and transformation.
