Queen Christina

  • Dir: Rouben Mamoulian

  • USA, 1933, English, 99mins, DCP

  • Cast: Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, Ian Keith

Rouben Mamoulian reimagines the story of the 17th century Swedish queen as a woman yearning for the freedom to love in the face of patriarchy and geopolitics. Dedicated to governing and her love of the arts, Queen Christina stubbornly refuses marriage despite constant pressure from her councillors. During an impromptu escape from palace life, Christina falls for Antonio, a charming envoy from Spain. Realising that their love will never be approved by her people, Christina becomes caught between her duty and her heart. As a fiercely resolute woman who dominates every room she is in, Greta Garbo brings such a majestic presence to her performance that we believe she can even calm an angry mob with only a speech.
