The Paradine Case
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
USA, 1947, English, 114mins, DCP
Cast: Gregory Peck, Ann Todd, Charles Laughton, Alida Valli
Despite working under the censorship of the Hays Code and constant interference by producer David O. Selznick, Alfred Hitchcock managed to use this legal drama to dabble in salacious themes like murder, adultery and psychosexual obsession, all motifs that he would return to in his later films. In a performance that would make an interesting contrast against his iconic turn as the righteous Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird 15 years later, Gregory Peck stars as a bewitched defense lawyer who is so obsessively in love with his latest client, a woman suspected of murdering her husband, that he attempts to find a scapegoat in order to get her off the hook.
