Three Colours: Red(Trois couleurs: Rouge)
Dir: Krzysztof Kieślowski
France / Poland / Switzerland, 1994, French, 99mins, DCP
Cast: Irène Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Jean-Pierre Lorit
Youthful idealism and innocence are confronted with the jaded and cynical perspective of old age in Kieślowski’s magisterial swansong. When a young model accidentally runs over a dog, the incident brings her in contact with a retired judge who has a habit of spying on others. These explorations of voyeurism and authorial omniscience – ways in which man tries to play God, even he struggles to find love – culminate in a tempest worthy of Shakespeare. A metaphysical treatise on fraternity, Three Colours: Red marks the culmination of Kieślowski’s life's work as a conjurer of destinies, even as Prospero-like he breaks his staff and drowns his book.
