Having built a following for his contemporary social studies, Mike Leigh popped a lavish twist into his filmography with the period musical comedy-drama Topsy-Turvy . In 1884 London, dramatist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan have their latest comic opera hit the stage. But Gilbert’s storylines are flagging and Sullivan longs to leave ‘trivial soufflés’ behind. When Gilbert chances across a Japanese cultural exhibition, seeds are planted for The Mikado and a reinvigoration of the Gilbert and Sullivan brand. Leigh revels in period detail and theatre minutiae for his loving tribute to an illustrious creative partnership.
