Almanac of Fall(Őszi almanach)
Dir: Béla Tarr
Hungary, 1984, Hungarian, 120mins, DCP
Cast: Hédi Temessy, Erika Bodnár, Miklós B. Székely
Leaping from cinema vérité into formalist filmmaking, Tarr creates a visually sublime and provocative film on the shifting relationships between an elderly matriarch and four inhabitants of a house through a chain of theatrical tête-à-tête. Their emotional cruelty, moral bankruptcy and philosophical quandaries are amplified under expressive colours, bizarre angles, and conspiratorial camera movements that glide along the confines of a dilapidated apartment, underscored by Mihály Víg’s haunting music. Uncompromising and brutal in its observation of humanity trapped in a disorienting purgatory of opulent decay, it brings new meaning to Sartre’s proclamation that ‘hell is other people’.
