Macbeth

  • Dir: Béla Tarr

  • Hungary, 1982, Hungarian, 62mins, DCP

  • Cast: György Cserhalmi, Erzsébet Kútvölgyi, Miklós B. Székely

Reinterpreting one of Shakespeare’s most formidable works, Tarr preserves the ambient tension while breathing new life into the classic tragedy through his avant-garde filmmaking. Composing of only two shots: the opening introduction about 5 minutes long, followed by a sequence that lasts the remaining 57 minutes, Tarr’s stark camera choreographs its movements completely in sync with the embittered characters, capturing the essence of their ambition, guilt and descent into madness – a metaphysical demonology that defines his later works. Originally produced for TV, its resolution and visual quality are not of the highest standard. Screening with short film Prologue (5’) from Visions of Europe (2004).
