Minnie and Moskowitz
Dir: John Cassavetes
USA, 1971, English, 114mins, DCP
Cast: Gena Rowlands, Seymour Cassel
It's no doubt a contemporary fairy tale – though brutality is everywhere. Grounded in a commitment to romantic optimism, it’s a captivatingly witty and sympathetic picture of a pair of misfits – Minnie, a depressed and jaded museum curator, and Moskowitz, a shaggy-haired parking lot attendant. A chance encounter leads them to decide to stay together, despite their apparent disparity and numerous adversities. Gena Rowlands and Seymour Cassel make their vulnerable and lonely characters all the more convincing, who are living on the knife-edge of breakdown, yet embracing an innocent grace and love strong enough to smooth things out in a merciless world.
