The Lover(L’Amant)
Dir: Jean-Jacques Annaud
France, UK, Vietnam, 1992, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, 115mins, DCP
Cast: Jane March, Tony Leung Ka-fai, Jeanne Moreau
Formative years in French Indochina inspired Duras’ famed semi-autobiographical novel The Lover. Jean-Jacques Annaud’s lush and explicit adaptation of the early 1930s story sees a free-spirited French 15-year-old meeting a wealthy Chinese man – played by the seductive Tony Leung Ka-fai – on a Mekong ferry. He’s immediately infatuated with her, even if she professes no love in return, and taboo trysts start in his Saigon bachelor room. Spiked with racism and privilege, and a sensation in Hong Kong on theatrical release, Annaud’s steamy tropical drama explores a relationship where any future seems scandalous and impossible.
