The Man from London(A londoni férfi)
Dir: Béla Tarr, Ágnes Hranitzky
France, Hungary, Germany, 2007, English, French, 139mins, DCP
Cast: Miroslav Krobot, Tilda Swinton, Erika Bók
In a brilliantly choreographed and breathtaking panoramic opening shot, Tarr invites the viewer to witness a shady transaction and murder that unfold under the night sky in a dockyard, caught by the watchful eyes of a railway operator in an observation tower. The obscure crime leaves him with a briefcase full of stolen cash, but what seems like a windfall soon racks him with guilt and suspicion. Infusing Georges Simenon’s crime novel with his poignant meditations on morality and existential malaise, Tarr’s intriguingly subversive film noir captures an intense atmosphere of dread and entrapment amidst the falling rain, made all the more unforgiving by the stark chiaroscuro mise-en-scène.
