The Outsider(Szabadgyalog)
Dir: Béla Tarr
Hungary, 1981, Hungarian, 128mins, DCP
Cast: András Szabó, Jolan Fodor, Imre Donkó
Expanding his kitchen-sink social realism, Tarr assumes the freedom structure of naturalistic, independent cinema to paint a more elaborate and critical portrayal of Hungary’s disenfranchised working class. Here is András, a violinist who drifts along an aimless path, undermined by unwise decisions and unwanted responsibilities as he struggles to survive on the edges of socialist society. Capturing the intense interactions between characters under flat colours and glaring close-ups, Tarr’s deliberate rough-and-ready chaotic camera framings embody an acute, yet sympathetic, reflection on the symbiotic, inarticulate relationships between personal dysfunction and social malady.
