The Prefab People(Panelkapcsolat)
Dir: Béla Tarr
Hungary, 1982, Hungarian, 76mins, DCP
Cast: Róbert Koltai, Judit Pogány, Gábor Koltai
Tarr’s trilogy on the proletariat reaches the defining point of his early forays into neo-realism, yielding a soul-crushing dissection of the hells of working-class marriage in communist Hungary. The improvisational camera gives an immediate intimacy and brutal directness to the lives of a struggling young couple, who have to confront their own inability to connect with each other. This is also where the director develops his predilection for stunning shots and stylistic direction, with the finale long take highlighting the inescapable depression of a deceptive reconciliation – one of the most powerful and disturbing moments in his early cinema.
