This bleak vision of the end of the days, boldly proclaimed by Tarr to be his final film, is a masterful culmination of his visionary cinema. Reimagining what happened to the old horse whose suffering triggered Nietzsche’s collapse, Tarr embraces a spiritually apocalyptic narrative of extraordinary minimalism, structured around one week in the gruelling lives of an aging farmer and his daughter, isolated on a windswept farm with a recalcitrant horse that refuses to eat. Evoking an eerie grip that transforms the ordinary into achingly beautiful poetry, this swan song is utterly heavenly and hellish in equal measure, presenting a vision of a world inexorably descending into final darkness.
