When a Palestinian village chief gets the Israeli army to waive curfew restrictions for a wedding, the greenlight comes with a catch: the military governor must be guest of honour for the celebrations. The invite prompts splits and subterfuge among the neighbours, but there’s scope too for building understanding. The first feature shot in Palestine by a Palestinian director, Wedding in Galilee brims with colour, poetry and sensuality as its villagers hold their boisterous and drawn-out big day. Ever cross-cutting and elevating tension, Khleifi plunges viewers into the intimacy of a community persevering under occupation.
