Werckmeister Harmonies(Werckmeister harmóniák)
Dir: Béla Tarr, Ágnes Hranitzky
Hungary, 2000, Hungarian, 146mins, DCP
Cast: Lars Rudolph, Peter Fitz, Hanna Schygulla
Doom-laden with silence and sadness, this hauntingly beautiful film reflects on humanity’s place in the cosmos, and the timeless immanence of evil and irrationality that gives way to tyranny. Framing his exposition through a naive postman, Tarr unfolds the disquiet of a stark, isolated town that arises with the arrival of a decrepit circus. In his distinctive long, bleak sequences, philosophical musings are interwoven with the presence of an enigmatic whale and the shadowy influence of a potentially powerful prince, which heightens the growing tensions within the frigid community. Eclipsed by rampant fear, paranoia and ominous prophecies, innocence ultimately succumbs to madness.
