West Beirut (West Beyrouth [À l'abri les enfants] )
Dir: Ziad Doueiri
France/Lebanon , 1998, Arabic, French, 105mins, DCP
Cast: Rami Doueiri, Naamar Sahli, Mohamad Chamas, Rola Al Amin
Semi-autobiographical, Ziad Doueiri’s coming of-age drama, one of Lebanon’s most critically acclaimed films, chronicles the war of partition between Christians and Muslims brewing in his native country in 1975. Treating the chaos as an adventure, the restless teenagers dedicated to their sexual curiosity and frivolous affairs daringly cross the West-East Beirut border to make their Super 8 films, but they soon come to understand the toll of the civil war on their normalcy of life. Incredibly poignant and emotionally vibrant, it offers a playful lens to an otherwise grave account of Lebanese history.
